Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The think box co-op program coordinator is responsible for developing and managing all aspects of the think box co-op program. It is essential that the program coordinator works closely with the CSE co-op office to ensure the think box co-op program is aligned with, and complements the existing CSE accredited co-op program. The program coordinator will support students, mentoring faculty and sponsoring companies in all aspects of the project life cycle, particularly in the design/ prototype/ build/ validate processes. The program coordinator will work closely with the think box manager to effectively manage resources as they pertain to co-op projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Manage the think box co-op program.
2. Build strong relationships with local and national companies and institutions to identify and develop appropriate design/build/validate projects for the think box co-op program.
3. Develop multi-media material to publicize and promote the think box co-op program.
4. Assist the think box Operations Manager in think box resource management as it pertains to the execution of co-op projects.
5. Project management; coordinating all project activities between co-op students and sponsoring companies.
6. Collaborate with the Technology Transfer Office to monitor and advise sponsors and students on IP and commercialization issues.
7. Ability to travel and work flexible hours, may include some evenings and weekends as required.
8. Assist the Executive Director to develop contracts and project scope of work documents with sponsoring companies.
9. Assist the think box Operations Manager and teaching assistants in training co-op student teams to operate equipment and work safely in think box .
10. Advise students and assist faculty mentors on design and additive manufacturing 'best practices'.
11. Evaluate and document student project work as required.
12. Provide technical support to students engaged on co-op projects.
13. Prepare progress reports and budgets as required by the Executive Director of think box .
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties as assigned.
CONTACTS
Department: Continuous contact with department staff and faculty, particularly with the career office and co-op office staff.
University: Occasional contact with the offices of the president and provost, deans of schools and colleges, and central administration.
External: Continuous contact local and national companies and institutes, and potential clients.
Students: Continuous contact with students, faculty and staff involved with design/build/validate projects and competitions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Assist in the recruitment, training and managing of undergraduate students applying to the think box co-op program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 3 to 5 years of post-baccalaureate experience in an industrial design and manufacturing (traditional and digital processes) related company.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. A graduate degree in an engineering or business-related discipline would be an advantage.
REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Proven demonstration of project management skills would be an advantage.
2. Familiarity with using project management software.
3. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and management skills coupled with a collaborative management style.
4. Experience in industrial, electrical/electronic, and/or mechanical design.
5. Experience with the application of computer-aided-design (CAD), computer-aided analysis (CAE), and computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) software systems. A working knowledge of Pro/ENGINEER and/ or SolidWorks design and manufacturing software would be an advantage.
6. Experience with a variety of manual and computer-controlled fabrication machines and equipment, including, but not limited to: manual lathes/milling/grinding machines, CNC lathe/milling machines, rapid prototyping processes, and standard manual machine and bench tools.
7. Ability to engage and motivate students from multiple backgrounds (art, music, engineering, science) engaged in design/build/validate projects
8. A successful record of project design management, manufacture, testing and delivery.
9. Ability to manage multi-disciplinary projects.
10. Community involvement.
11. A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The think box Co-op Program Coordinator will be working in think box , and could include travel and occasional overnight stays while visiting students and companies engaged on co-op related projects. The Program Coordinator may be asked to work flexible hours which may include occasional evenings and weekends. Workshop safety rules must be strictly enforced at all times to all users of the various workshop/laboratory facilities. Sound engineering practices must be followed and demonstrated at all times. None of the processes or materials will present any toxic hazards.
