Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

Suspending the reuse of any RME (reusable medical equipment) if suspected that the device was not properly cleaned, disinfected or sterilized. Reviewing print outs to ensure mechanical parameters have been met and documenting the results in the sterilization log. Identifying which items are reprocessed on unit and which items are sent to sterile processing for reprocessing and/or sterilization. Assisting with quality assurance throughout the decontamination and sterile processing areas. Inventorying and processing devices and assuming continuous training in support of the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment in support of the clinics, wards, dental and other services throughout the Medical Center. Reprocessing all Critical and Semi Critical RME and specific non-critical equipment. Processing all instrument trays per instructions as well as other sources including American Association for Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management), Once Source and others. Decontaminating and reprocessing a variety of complex, delicate and costly scopes; such as Bronchoscopes, Colonoscopes, Endoscopes, and Cystoscopes utilized within the facility. Receiving contaminated supplies such as instruments, basins, syringes and equipment from wards, and clinics, and inspects these items for damage to ensure equipment is in good working condition. Removing soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and use of ultrasonic equipment. Loading and operating sterilizers such as Steam, Sterrad, and high level disinfecting scope reprocessor. Assembling a full range of surgical instrumentation trays from simple sets of four or five to very complex sets of over 200 instruments. Operating decontamination equipment such as washer decontaminators, sonic washers, irrigators, automatic cart wash and tube dryers. Work schedule:

Experience:
Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education:
One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR Experience/Education Combination:
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Grade Determinations:

None beyond the basic requirements. GS-04:
Experience:
Six months experience as a MST, operating room or surgical technician or other position that demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing in a clinical setting; OR Education:
Two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation. NOTE:
Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or nursing assistants obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces, the U.S. Maritime Service, or hospitals under close medical and professional supervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to 6 months of experience. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs below:
1. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. 2. Basic knowledge of medical terminology in order to assemble specialty operating room/clinic instrument sets. 3. Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. 4. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. GS-05:
Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level; OR Education:
Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation or a Bachelor's degree. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regards to sterility. 3. Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. GS-06:
Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. 3. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. 4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. 5. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. Preferred
Experience:

The employee usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is frequent requirement for lifting instrument trays or baskets or instrument sets weighing up to 50 pounds from the floor to chest level. The incumbent transports trays and equipment on carts that may weigh up to 400 pounds when full. They may be pushed but are usually pulled due to height and visibility concerns.
