Diagostic Radiologic Technologist (Computerized Tomography)

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Schedules exams in a manner to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases.This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc. Confers with Radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Adheres ACR Guidelines when utilizing surgical sterile techniques. This requires scrub-in technique, preparation of surgical trays, preparation of contrast, supplying of catheters and guide wires, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment that may encounter the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient. This is done to minimize hazards associated with invasive procedures and involves the use of sterile packs, gloves, syringes, guide wires, catheters, cleanup trays, etc., after exam is completed. Adheres ACR Guidelines sterile technique, hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education. Works with the Radiologist as a member of the non-vascular interventional Radiographic team. Must assist the needs of the Radiologists with the performance of the exam. Must be continuously on the alert for the patient's condition, sterile field, catheter and guide wire sizes and configurations, etc. The alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc. Per the ACR manual on contrast media, Technologist prepares contrast materials that are used in CT/CT angiography and other exams. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material usage is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient. Is certified to insert IV needles for administration of contrast material when necessary. Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. The technologists to assure compliance to radiation regulations wear film badges. The incumbent must also be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Ensures ALARA principle is applied. (As low as reasonably achievable). Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes the maintenance of patient registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system. Properly identifies patient images. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. The technologist must be certain that the patient I.D. band and the request are identical. Confirms patient identity by verbally confirming patient name and social security number Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. Responsible for stocking and inventory of all CT supplies and related materials. Performs irregular hour emergency exams on standby on call coverage for nights' weekends, and holidays. The schedule is on rotational basis based on number of qualified staff not to exceed four. Continually reviews new developments in the field of CT angiography and computerized tomography. Is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available. The purpose of this review is to provide the patients with the best possible scans for diagnostic purposes. Work Schedule:

All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT). Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education:
Applicants must have completed a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
Applicants must proficiently speak, read, write, and understand the English Language May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations:
GS-9:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Experience is defined as independently providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology (CT) with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues.Also, applicants must meet the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) i. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. ii. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. iii. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. iv. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. v. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.vi. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients References:

The incumbent will be required to perform heavy lifting, 45 pounds or over and moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds. The work requires pushing I hour and reaching above shoulder. The technologist will be needed to stand 6 hours and walking 6 hours, repeated bending 3 hours. The technologist must distinguish basic colors and have emotional and mental stability. Heaving lifting of totally incapacitated patient is done only with the help of others using approved patient lifting equipment.
