Nursing Assistant

Providing a variety of personal hygiene (i.e., bath, oral, hair, nails, bowel and bladder). Feeding patients unable to do so for themselves including administering tube feedings. Changing nasal oxygen equipment. Showing initiative and skill in patient care with minimal direction of a professional nurse. Performing a range of personal care procedures with minimal supervision. Observing the patient's condition for gross or subtle changes of deterioration and reporting immediately to professional nurse. Performing suctioning of oral and healed tracheostomy. Inserting bladder catheters using strict aseptic techniques. Adhering to principles of infection control, safety and universal precautions. Assisting with range of motion, lifting, positioning, and self-help activities. Maintaining Certification in CPR. Cleaning and maintaining patient's bedside units and ward work areas. Providing personal hygiene for residents that require assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, shaving, toileting, and other personal needs. Participating in fall prevention techniques including the appropriate use of bed and/or chair alarms, low beds, floor mats, assisting with toileting. Following falls prevention technique as outlined in the plan of care and as directed by the registered nurse. Attending CLC safety huddles and participate in hourly rounds, providing meaningful input and concerns regarding patient condition and safety. Using patient safe handling equipment including proper use of ceiling lifts to prevent patient or staff injury. Promoting resident centered care by using the principles of Cultural Transformation and Relationship Based Care. Resident choice and personal preferences are recognized as important during the resident's stay in the Community Living Center. Assisting the resident with restorative nursing care including restorative dressing, grooming, hygiene, toileting, dining, transfer, ambulation, range of motion, communication, and splint or brace care. Adhering to principles of infection control, safety and universal precautions. Basic Requirements:

One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. English Language Proficiency. Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy. Preferred Experience WCT3 - 1 year NA experience - STNA TCU - State Tested Certification Preferred - Minimum 3 year long term care or rehab experience preferred Grade Determinations:
GS-3:
None beyond the basic requirements. GS-4:
One year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments. OR Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians (Transcripts must be submitted). AND Demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents. 2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. 4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. GS-5:
One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. (Transcripts must be submitted) AND Demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. 2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. 3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc. References:
VA Handbook 5005/81, Part II, Appendix G46. Nursing Assistant Qualification Standard The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-5. Physical Requirements:
The nursing assistant position requires good physical and mental health. Physical activities may include:
bending, lifting, rotating/transferring patients, and walking/standing most of an eight-hour shift. The position requires the ability to work in a highly stressful environment.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
